GHK-Cu (Copper Tripeptide-1) is a naturally occurring human tripeptide composed of Glycine, Histidine, and Lysine bound to a copper ion (Cu^{2+}). First discovered in human plasma in 1973, GHK-Cu levels decline significantly with age—dropping from roughly 200 ng/mL at age 20 to around 80 ng/mL by age 60.

It is widely regarded as the gold standard for skin remodeling, tissue repair, anti-aging, and extracellular matrix (ECM) regeneration.

Primary Mechanisms of Action

GHK-Cu acts as a signal peptide and dynamic feedback regulator for connective tissue repair and gene expression:

1. Collagen & Elastin Synthesis: Stimulates fibroblasts to produce Type I and Type III collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycans (like hyaluronic acid), restoring skin density, firmness, and elasticity.

2. Tissue Remodeling & Scar Reduction: Regulates both metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their inhibitors (TIMPs). This dual action breaks down damaged, cross-linked collagen (old scar tissue) and replaces it with healthy, organized extracellular matrix.

3. Gene Expression Modulation: Studies indicate GHK-Cu resets the expression of over 4,000 human genes, upregulating tissue repair and antioxidant defense genes while downregulating inflammatory genes.

4. Angiogenesis & Wound Healing: Delivers ionic copper necessary for lysyl oxidase activity and accelerates blood vessel growth to supply oxygen and nutrients to damaged tissue.
