SS-31 (also known as Elamipretide, MTP-131, or Bendavia) is a synthetic tetrapeptide (D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NHâ‚‚) engineered specifically to target and restore mitochondrial dysfunction.
Unlike traditional antioxidants that scavenge free radicals generally throughout the cell, SS-31 selectively concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM), addressing cellular energy production at its source.

 Cardiolipin Binding: SS-31 selectively binds to cardiolipin, a unique phospholipid exclusive to the inner mitochondrial membrane. Cardiolipin is critical for maintaining mitochondrial structure, cristae curvature, and electron transport chain (ETC) function.
 Restoring ATP Production: By stabilizing cardiolipin, SS-31 optimizes the assembly and function of the supercomplexes within the electron transport chain. This improves mitochondrial respiration and increases ATP (adenosine triphosphate) output.
