Primary Key Mechanisms & Effects

 Anxiolytic (Anti-Anxiety): Selank modulates \text{GABA}_\text{A} receptors in the brain, helping increase inhibitory neural signals to promote calm without the sedating, hypnotic, or addictive properties associated with traditional benzodiazepines.  

 Nootropic & Neuroprotective: It upregulates Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus—a key protein involved in synaptic plasticity, memory formation, and neuron survival.  

 Neurotransmitter Regulation: Selank influences levels and turnover rates of monoamines, including dopamine and serotonin, helping support mood stability, focus, and motivation under stress.  

 Enzyme Inhibition: It inhibits enkephalin-degrading enzymes, prolonging the action of endogenous enkephalins (natural pain and stress-relieving peptides in the brain).  

 Immunomodulation: Inherited from its parent peptide tuftsin, Selank modulates cytokine production (such as lowering pro-inflammatory IL-6 and IL-1$\beta$) under conditions of physical or emotional stress.
