Kisspeptin 10
Kisspeptin (encoded by the KISS1 gene) is a naturally occurring peptide hormone that acts as the "master switch" for the human reproductive system. It operates at the top of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal (HPG) axis, controlling the cascade that stimulates the production of testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone.
How Kisspeptin Works
Kisspeptin acts directly on neurons in the hypothalamus by binding to the GPR54 receptor (also known as the Kisspeptin receptor, KISS1R). This binding initiates a powerful signal cascade:
1. GnRH Release: Kisspeptin stimulates neurons in the hypothalamus to release Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) in natural pulses.
2. Gonadotropin Stimulation: GnRH travels to the anterior pituitary gland, triggering the release of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) into the bloodstream.
3. Sex Steroid Production: LH and FSH signal the gonads to synthesize endogenous testosterone (in men) or estrogen and progesterone (in women), while driving spermatogenesis and ovulation.
